Graphical abstractOpen the window: Hierarchical nitrogen-rich holey graphene monoliths (Nr-HGM) were prepared through a single-step approach from cheap molecules. Such a graphene network could act as highly efficient electrocatalyst with superb electrocatalytic activity and stability for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in both acid and alkaline electrolytes, outperforming the state-of-the-art metal-free catalysts in the literature.
