Expanded graphite was adopted to prepare graphene oxide and the traditional Hummers' method was adapted, especially for the mid-temperature reaction. A spontaneous-expansion step was introduced to indicate the sufficient intercalation of graphite. Preparation of GO became much safer and more stable in high yield than that by the unmodified method.

A new magnetic electrochemical sensor based on Fe3O4-graphene oxide was constructed and applied the direct determination of phenylalanine. Cyclic voltammetric study indicated that the oxidation process is irreversible and diffusion controlled. The results show that by using the proposed method, phenylalanine can be determined with a detection limit of 14.5 nM.

The GZCS show a good visible light response, which is an importance to develop an effective visible-light driven photocatalyst. ( As is known to all, the UV light only accounts for about 4% of the solar radiation energy, while the visible light (VL) contributes to about 43%.) In addition, the supporting material RGO for Zn0.8Cd0.2S (ZCS) nanoparticles effectively enhanced their the photodegradation activities of methylene blue under VL irradiation. The GZCS with 5 wt.% RGO content, namely, GZCS5.0 exhibited the highest photodegradation efficiency of MB (96%), which was 2.7 times of pure ZCS.
