Graphical abstract MoS2/graphene (MoS2/G-IL) composites were prepared by hydrothermal route with mediation of ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate). The MoS2/G-IL composite displays de-layered MoS2 sheets aligned on the graphene and exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performances for hydrogen evolution reaction with a small Tafel slope of 52 mV/dec in acidic medium.
