Graphical abstractThe chemical vapor deposition growth of vertical Mo2C/graphene VdW heterostructures is investigated thoroughly. The growth of graphene over liquid metal precursor promote the defect-free growth. The growth of the Mo2C crystals occurs simultaneously to this of graphene. The interaction between graphene-Mo2C results in non-homogeneous strain in the graphene film. Mo2C crystals grow in stacks of domains with thickness ∼2 nm. The CVD growth over liquid precursors favors the synthesis of vertical VdW heterostructures. The presence of graphene favors the CVD synthesis of larger and thinner Mo2C crystals with a lower nucleation density.
