Graphical abstractA facile thermal annealing approach to prepare large-area, high quanlity and mostly single-layer N-doped graphene sheets using PAN thin film as the precursor. Pyrrolic-like N atoms are proposed an essential component in N-doped graphene sheets.

Graphical abstractExpanded graphite was adopted to prepare graphene oxide and the traditional Hummers' method was adapted, especially for the mid-temperature reaction. A spontaneous-expansion step was introduced to indicate the sufficient intercalation of graphite. Preparation of GO became much safer and more stable in high yield than that by the unmodified method.
