Graphical abstract

Through regulating the respiration of microbe grown on 2D and 3D graphene electrodes and utilizing its pseudocapacitance, a novel bio-inspired microbial supercpacitor with remarkable performance is presented, as a carbon-neutral, renewable energy conversion and storage device. Significantly high current/power densities, cycle stability, specific capacitance, energy densities are demonstrated. A quantitative kinetics study of extracellular electron transfer (EET) of the microbe is also studied through the supercapacitor.
