Graphical abstract

Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) with different pyridinic-N contents modified reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) catalysts demonstrated the electrocatalytic activities and can thus be used as metal-free catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media. pyridinic-N played an important part in electrocatalytic ORR, wherein N-GQD/r-GO samples with higher pyridinic-N content markedly increased electrocatalytic property by promoting onset potential, cathodic reduction peak, and current density.
